Back when I was kid, people used to read physical newspapers. I lived in a small town about 100 miles west of Chicago and a guy in my neighborhood was looking for someone to take over his paper route for the summer.
So when I started, I had to get up early and ride my bike to deliver the papers. It took a few days to figure out how to navigate the route. At first I was delivering the papers later then the other guy and the newspaper received complaints about me. Soon enough I got the hang of it, and the customers started greeting me and giving me compliments. They were surprised I was leaving the paper at the door instead of throwing it on the lawn. I assumed that was what we were supposed to do. It took me few seconds to ride up to the porch, open the screen door and drop the paper in. However I made their lives a lot easier by not forcing the customers to leave their air conditioned homes and put on a robe or go out in the rain to read what happened overnight.
Leaving the paper in the door was at most an extra 15 minutes total for me but for the customer it was a huge convenience for them and this is what a great service experience is. By the end of summer, customers were giving me cookies and cash tips. They were upset when the end of summer arrived and I was no longer going to be delivering their paper. Being naive of how things work, I was stunned when the regular guy returned and he wasn’t too thrilled that I raised the bar for him!
